Genealogical Serendipity is a term used often in the family history community to describe when an ancestor helps out a researcher. It often is followed with something like, ‘I felt pushed to keep going through the microfilm or turn the page.’ ‘A relative I didn’t know existed reached out and gave me something that belonged to my direct ancestors.’ ‘I heard a whisper or voice when I was at the cemetery to walk over there when I was looking for a certain grave.’
You get the idea.
Beyond saying it was serendipity, most people will not publicly explain further their ancestral connection for fear of being ridiculed or banished from groups. As in most other parts of society and groups, those who do not conform often suffer. It’s the same in the genealogical community.
It’s considered too “weird” by “those in charge” to listen to the voices you hear. It’s “wrong” to not paper trail every single thing you know or learn. It’s considered “bad” genealogy and you couldn’t certainly be a professional if you listen and work with your ancestors and put that information into your research or something you write.
I actually channeled much of the end of the chapter on Michael Kokoska in my book Stories of the Lost, in which I tell the stories of four of my ancestors who died in WWI and WWII. Michael’s story contains cited facts mixed in with channeled messages from him and his father.
Some would call this creative writing, but I did a lot of channeling and emotional processing as I wrote that particular story. In fact, the end of Michael’s story is one I tell when I teach military research strategies and it brings even the roughest, toughest men to tears. THAT is how powerful our ancestral connections can be. Those connections can break down walls, change lives, and bring peace and closure.
But what if we ignore all of that and all those “in charge” and trust in ourselves, our ancestors, and our intuition and share this with others without fear of repercussions from the community? What might we learn about ourselves and our ancestors? Who might we encounter on our path to not only help us break down those brick walls but also join our soul tribe?
Have you decided to step off the genealogical paper trail for a moment? 2024 is the year to deepen your ancestral connections. If you missed reading Intuitive Genealogy Part 1, be sure to check it out.
What if……..?
What if our ancestors could send someone who is living to contact us and share information? That’s genealogy serendipity right? But what if you took this further?
What if that information starts us on a new path in life which allows us to fulfill a dream or travel or discover something about ourselves we couldn’t have otherwise?
What if that ancestor made sure that over the years more information and people would appear so we could add to our family history and our life?
What if this living person is someone we have a soul contract with that requires us to form a relationship of some sort and go on a journey together that benefits and heals us both?
What if love develops from this journey?
What if our ancestor had this planned after his or her death as part of their journey in the afterlife? Ensuring we, perhaps being born decades later as the family healer, would take the challenge provided, form the relationship, do the research, and change lives?
My Story
Robert Brouk is the ancestor that I firmly believe made a plan after his tragic death, to make sure his widow Virginia and I would someday meet. That i would someday write his story. That Virginia’s story and our friendship would change lives. More lives than we could imagine or know. That is how powerful our ancestors can be as they work with and through us, if we allow the connection to happen.
You can’t paper trail how many lives your research or stories impact, heal, or change. You can’t paper trail how they may change their beliefs or behaviors or end toxic and negative family cycles because of your work - research or healing.
Trust your knowing. Trust your intuition when it comes to these things.
It took me more than 25 years, the act of writing Robert’s story and publishing it. Then writing his widow’s story and publishing. Teaching classes on military research and writing, and doing a tremendous amount of personal healing work to realize that Robert must have planned all this after his death. What other explanation could there be for all that has taken place since I was a baby genealogist in 1996 and first learned about him and his story?
How else could one explain the serendipitous meeting of Virginia and all that developed with our friendship since 2005? Virginia will be 102 this year and we are still very good friends. How else could you explain distant family members and a family friend showing up years after I wrote my book about Robert, with artifacts that were his? Providing me with family photos, documents, and even 8mm film!
Everything in divine timing right?
Robert changed my life on so many levels and led me into the military work long before I knew that was going to be my path. He also opened the door for me to look at my grandpa’s WWII Navy story - which I’m still processing and working on. I believe too that my grandpa set things in motion during the war and after his death because his soul knew I would be here to find answers and do the deep, painful healing work.
I invite you to look at some of your special ancestor relationships and move beyond the shallow genealogy serendipity idea. What you discover may change your life and research.
Read how Robert and I connected in my article, Ancestral Communication Part 1: Robert Brouk. His story is also in my book Stories of the Lost.
